Christmas tree controversy? Once again, FOX gets the story wrong
By Gavin Ehringer  l Published: Friday, December 25 2009 09:47

When during the holidays season, the smell of pine hits the air, FOX News can be counted on to sniff controversy.
Yesterday, FOX ran a story titled "Community Trees Rile Residents in North Carolina." The story implies that many citizens are angry that the town of Cary, a bedroom suburb of Raleigh, N.C., officially refers to the decorated town hall pines as "community trees," rather than Christmas trees. And while this is true, the mayor of the town, Harold Weinbrecht, said that little controversy existed before the media [read FOX News] made mention of it.

The story conveniently plays into the lament of Christian conservatives who feel that a conspiracy is underfoot by secularists to strip the meaning from the annual holiday.

"Unfortunately the media is misleading everyone," said Harold Weinbrecht. "The fact is that these trees have always been named 'community trees' and were named these names long ago to become inclusive...This was not done by the current council. What is proposed, and incorrectly reported by the media to mislead the public to create a controversy, is that two council members want to rename the trees to Christmas trees. And as far as I know there is no council opposition."
