'Young Victoria': It's not easy bein' queen |

Of course, historically and cinematically, it would be vastly more interesting to do the Old Victoria (thank you, Judi Dench in 1997's "Mrs. Brown"). But then you wouldn't get a vision of a spunky, attractive, passionate young woman who triumphs over the hardships of being born into wealth and power to become the greatest queen in wide-screen history. You get babe Emily Blunt as Her Ravishingness. The trailer tells us she has spirit, could be conceived as a proto-feminist figure, was actually a sexual creature, and gets to wear cool dresses. Her mom's a bitch (Miranda Richardson plays her -- good actresses always get to play bitches). Her uncle, William IV, who passes the crown to her, is a wacky old coot played by Jim Broadbent. Ooh, and he's irascible and his hair stands up weird!Who can she trust? Are guys into her 'cause she's bodacious or 'cause she's gonna rule the school someday? Will she fall for Paul Bettany or Rupert Friend? Will this movie suck? It looks pretty. At least there's not an Aphex Twin/Cure/New Order soundtrack, as in Coppola's "Marie Antoinette."

Holiday time means, among other things, time for the enormous, creamy, deliciously Period Romances to hit the local bijou. This year the big contender is "The Young Victoria." It's about Queen Victoria. When she was young.
