American businessman gunning for Arsenal

Biz Brief

arsenal_234The billionaire sports mogul Stan Kroenke, who owns the Denver Nuggets basketball team and Colorado Rapids soccer team, is inching ever closer to a takeover bid for English football club Arsenal. His latest dealing takes him within less than 1 percent of control.

That's according to several confirmed news reports. Kroenke, has purchased another 427 shares of the Gunners' holding company at $5.8 million (USD), putting his stake at 29.6 percent. And he was already the top stakeholder before the deal.

Kroenke owns Denver's Pepsi Center as well as the Colorado Avalanche hockey team -- among myriad other sports ventures.

He also launched the regional sports network, Altitude.

As for Arsenal, manager Arsène Wenger’s side face AZ Alkmaar at Emirates Stadium in the UEFA Champions League, hoping to top Group H going into the knockout rounds.
