European tale: a drug smuggler's film and a pot bust
By Brian Reyes  l Published: Wednesday, November 04 2009 10:00

Here's a piece of advice for anyone thinking of trying their hand at a spot of drug smuggling in these lean times: don't film yourself in the act.

Sound obvious? Perhaps, but not everyone is that bright. I know of one chap who was so proud of himself at the helm of a speedboat loaded with drugs that he just had to record it all on his mobile phone.

Read on and see the video... This was shot on a fast launch crossing the Strait of Gibraltar from Morocco to Spain. The drugs are in the back of the launch. The drums at the front are fuel, suggesting this particular boat was heading north the long way round by sailing deep into the Mediterranean to try and avoid coastal radars and sensors.

When I first saw this about three years ago, I was told by a cop friend that they managed to slip through that time. But the guy was arrested some time later and this video was found on his phone. Not sure if it's true but still, it made me laugh...

gib_bust_1The proximity of the Spanish coastline to Morocco means there's a lot of drug smuggling round here. The next picture show bales of hashish seized recently. Each bale is filled with hundreds of slabs of oily resin.

gib_bust_2Mind you, there's also a growing trend (excuse the pun) in home cultivation in this area. Just this morning, Spain's Guardia Civil arrested a drug dealing gardener after neighbours reported seeing marijuana plants peeking over the wall of his San Roque home.

Officers investigated found three-metre plants growing in the patio. Police believe he may be related to the man in the video.
