Have you heard of the Code of Conduct? Its seven principles have been governing behavior at my kids' elementary school for years now. And they work.
Simple and direct, we have taken them to heart at home, and I have tried them in the workplace and on the street. Here they are:
Kindness: I treat others the way I would like to be treated. Respect: I am considerate of myself, others, property and those in authority. Responsibility: I am in charge and accountable for what I say and do. Self-Control: I manage my words, actions and emotions properly and without supervision. Empathy: I think about and try to understand other people's needs and feelings. Effort: I stay with a task and do my best until it is completed. Integrity: I do the right thing even when nobody's watching me." When I have witnessed bad behavior in person, or seen it on the global stage, it has violated one or more of these seven principles. These were written for and are easily comprehended by elementary-school students. They form an easy-to-remember ethical mantra. How nice if we could all live by them! Share |
