Soy scare: The toxin that might be in your health food
By Brad Weismann  l Published: Wednesday, April 28 2010 10:09

Healthy?

Would you feed your baby gasoline? If you are health-conscious and make soy protein a part of you and your family's diet, you may be doing just that.

According to a study published by the Cornucopia Institute on May 18, 2009, many "natural" and "organic" food products that contain soy protein, including infant formula, veggie burgers and Clif Bars are contaminated with hexane - a neurotoxic petrochemical solvent used to separate the protein from the raw soybeans. Raw soybeans are bathed in hexane, a byproduct of gasoline, a process in widespread commercial use for the separation of edible oils since the 1940s. In conjunction with Natural News, Cornucopia tested food products containing materials subject to hexane processing. These tests revealed the presence of hexane residue up to 21 parts per million.

Is this harmful? The Food and Drug Administration has not yet set limits on hexane residue. However, the Environmental Protection Agency considers hexane to be a hazardous air pollutant. And in fact, Martek Biosciences Corporation, which uses hexane in the manufacture of DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid used in infant formula, was responsible for the explosion of hexane pollutants in the wastewater treatment system downstream from its manufacturing plant in Winchester, Kentucky in March of 2003.
