A low-power surrogate for the multi-million dollar high-energy laser could be fired at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico sometime during the 2011 fiscal year, according to Boeing, working under the Army's High Energy Laser Technology Demonstrator (HEL TD) program. Boeing is also developing laser other systems for the U.S. military, including the Airborne Laser, Free Electron Laser, and Tactical Relay Mirror System. -- Image: A photo illustration using an Oshkosh Corp. promotional picture of a Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck/Chad diPrince, dscriber.com

The U.S. Army has moved a step closer to having a weapon straight out of a vintage "Star Trek" episode. Boeing today announced that it plans to mount a powerful high-energy laser weapon cannon to an eight-wheel-drive Oshkosh Corp. Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck. The system is being designed to destroy fast-moving airborne targets, such as rockets, artillery shells, and mortar rounds. It's not hard to imagine other uses for such a laser, which if successful and deployed could transform U.S. defense forces.
