Brandon Marshall going to Seattle? That's a big change for the NFC West

Marshalling Marshall

The rumor mill: The enigmatic, super-talented Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall is likely on his way to the Seattle Seahawks. Since the Broncos put a first-round tender on Marshall, if the Seahawks make an offer, the Broncos would have seven days to match or receive the sixth pick in April's NFL draft. Trading the sixth pick in the draft for Marhsall may be a steep price to ask for a guy flirting with suspension from the NFL if he has one more run in with the law. That's not just our view at dscriber. "The Seahawks and Broncos can negotiate between them to send a lesser haul more befitting Marshall's trade value," writes Pro Football Talk.

That could mean sending the Broncos back the No. 14 pick in the draft -- a pick the Broncos gave the Seahawks during last year's draft in order to select Alphonso Smith of Wake Forest.

If it happened, the Seahawks would have one of the most dynamic one-two punches at the wide receiver position in the NFL. Last year they signed longtime Cincinnati wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh as a free agent. Housh didn't make as big a splash with Seattle as many thought he would, amassing 79 catches for 911 yards in 2009, with just three touchdowns. It wasn't all his fault, though. His quarterback, Matt Hasselbeck, spent time injured and the two never seemed to get on the same page. Earlier, we speculated that Housh may get Jake Delhomme as a new quarterback, but adding someone with Marshall's considerable talents would make a much larger impact.

Teams would have to game plan for each receiver, which would open one or both up for more opportunities. It would also give Seattle's mediocre running game room to move -- and probably boost Seattle past the 49ers as contenders for the NFC West, just behind the Arizona Cardinals.
