Brittney Griner, one of the few women in college basketball ever to dunk a basketball during a game, now has another, more dubious distinction. The Baylor women's basketball star last night punched Texas Tech's Jordan Barncastle in yet another low for women's sports. Barncastle spun and tossed Griner to the side and Griner responded with a right-hander to Barncastle's face. The two were separated as both players' teammates flood the area and the game was suspended for 10 minutes. Then came the review of video and penalties. Griner earned a technical foul and her teammate Morgan Medlock earned a technical foul for her role after the punch. The Texas tech bench also earned a technical after storming the court. Barncastle returned to the game to shoot the technical foul free throws, but did not play the rest of the game and had to sit on the bench with cotton balls shoved up her nose and watch her squad fall to No. 14 Baylor 69-60. Afterward, Texas Tech coach Kristy Curry said Barncastle may miss the rest of the season. Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said she'll deal with Griner, but won't discuss the situation in the media: "There's no place for that in sports. I will deal with Brittney Griner, and it won't be discussed in the media. You saw the game. Leave it at that." Here's the video: The incident reminds us of recent fights on the soccer fields -- hair pulling and shoving. Share |
